Plastic-film accelerated weathering vs outdoor service life: exposure hours are not years

No laboratory exposure-hour total can be converted by this guide into outdoor years, shelf life, transport life or a warranty. Start with the actual use environment and an identified film, then keep xenon-arc, fluorescent-UV and natural outdoor exposure records separate and require independently defined before-and-after property evidence for the decision that matters.

Exposure is a conditioning history—not an outdoor-life result

ASTM D2565-23 and ISO 4892-2:2013 with its published Amendment 1:2021 identify separate xenon-arc exposure routes, ASTM D4329-26 and ISO 4892-3:2024 identify separate fluorescent-UV routes, and ASTM D1435-20 identifies natural outdoor exposure. ISO 4892-1:2024 provides general guidance for laboratory light-source exposure. Their light sources, environments and exposure records are not assumed equivalent, and ASTM and ISO designations are not crosswalks. The exposure record must stay attached to the exact specimen and to a separately selected post-exposure property method; neither hours nor cycles establish service life.

ASTM D2565-23 is active as the xenon-arc exposure practice for plastics intended for outdoor applications; ASTM D4329-26 is active for fluorescent-UV lamp apparatus exposure of plastics; and ASTM D1435-20 is active for natural outdoor exposure of plastics. ISO 4892-1:2024 is published and current as general guidance and requirements for laboratory light-source exposure. ISO 4892-2:2013 remains published and current for xenon-arc sources, its Amendment 1:2021 is published, and the base standard is at lifecycle stage 90.92, International Standard to be revised. That revision status does not withdraw the current publication or turn a draft into a substitute. ISO 4892-3:2024 is published and current for fluorescent-UV lamps. These ASTM and ISO records, their parts and amendments, the two laboratory light sources and natural outdoor exposure are not equivalent, interchangeable or directly convertible. An exposure history without an independently defined and completed post-exposure property measurement establishes no property retention. 01How many outdoor years equal a stated number of laboratory weathering hours?

This guide supplies no conversion. The relationship depends on the identified material, exposure source, spectrum, dose, temperature, moisture, site, climate, mounting and property being measured. Use the laboratory result as method-bound evidence and validate the actual use separately.

02Are xenon-arc and fluorescent-UV exposure equivalent?

No. They are separate light-source routes with distinct ASTM and ISO identities. Keep each report under its original source, method, specimen, conditions and post-exposure measurement rather than converting hours or cycles.

03Are ASTM D2565 and ISO 4892-2 interchangeable?

No equivalence or crosswalk is supplied. Both identify xenon-arc exposure routes, but the responsible parties must choose the governing current method and preserve the original report basis.

04Does natural outdoor exposure establish universal outdoor durability?

No. Keep the result attached to the actual site, climate, season, dates, mounting, specimen, control and measured property. It does not automatically represent another location, period, construction or use.

05Can an exposure report alone prove property retention?

No. Exposure is a conditioning history. Retention or change requires an independently defined pre/post property method, mapped specimens and controls, original results, units, variability and buyer-approved interpretation.

06Can weathering evidence approve outdoor life, shelf life, transport life or a warranty?

Not by itself. Those decisions require a representative real-use plan, the applicable film or package, exposure and handling sequence, separate performance evidence, criteria and an identified approval or warranty owner.
