ASTM D882 vs ISO 527-3: compare film tensile data on one basis
A tensile table is not one interchangeable result. Strength at yield, strength at break, elongation and modulus describe different parts of the stress-strain response, while specimen direction and test setup can change the reported value. Before comparing offers, keep the exact output and test basis beside every row.

“Technically similar” does not make two supplier rows automatically interchangeable
ASTM D882-26 covers tensile properties of thin plastic sheeting and films below 1.0 mm and says the method is technically similar to ISO 527-3. ISO 527-3:2018 covers test conditions for films and sheets below 1 mm using the general principles in ISO 527-1. Similar scope and terminology do not remove differences in the governing edition, specimen, speed, grips, extension measurement, calculation or material specification. Compare only after those fields and the exact tensile output are aligned.

Name the required tensile output
State the purchasing question and the exact output: yield, break, elongation, modulus or another controlled stress-strain field. Do not ask for a generic tensile number.
Align method and specimen
Keep edition, specification precedence, direction, construction, thickness, geometry, preparation, speed, grips, extension measurement and conditioning together.
Separate evidence from acceptance
Keep typical data, supplier limits, sample reports and lot results in separate roles, then assign sampling, retest and disposition to the responsible buyer and technical parties.

Official method scope organizes the comparison; it does not supply a film value or approval
The official public pages summarize scope and significance and do not replace the licensed procedures. ASTM lists D882-26 as active for thin plastic sheeting and films below 1.0 mm. Its public significance statement identifies thickness, preparation, speed, grips and extension measurement as comparison variables, and its current scope says D882 is technically similar to ISO 527-3. ISO 527-3:2018 was confirmed in 2024 and covers films and sheets below 1 mm based on ISO 527-1. ISO 527-1:2019 was confirmed in 2025 but is marked to be revised, so its status and the current governing editions must be rechecked before use. An ExxonMobil product-data example reports tensile strength at yield, strength at break, elongation at break and secant modulus in separate MD and TD rows and states that typical properties are not specifications; it is an industry reporting example, not a LayerSource grade, supplier relationship, method, facility or capability. The buyer, supplier and responsible laboratory own method selection, comparison, sampling, retest and release.
07 BUYER QUESTIONS
Resolve the assumptions that make quotes diverge.
01Are ASTM D882 and ISO 527-3 film tensile results equivalent?+
Do not assume automatic equivalence. ASTM D882-26 describes the methods as technically similar, but the governing editions, specimen, speed or strain-rate basis, grips, extension measurement, calculation and material specification still need to align before comparison.
02Can two tensile-strength values be compared when both use MPa?+
A common unit is necessary but not sufficient. Confirm the exact output and endpoint, method and edition, direction, specimen construction and thickness, preparation, setup, conditioning and evidence role.
03Are tensile strength, elongation and modulus interchangeable?+
No. They describe different parts of the tensile response. Keep each property under its reported name and endpoint; do not convert one into another or use a generic tensile label.
04Can an MD tensile result be compared with a TD result?+
Not as the same directional result. Request MD-to-MD and TD-to-TD evidence from identified specimens, then preserve the production-web and sampling map through slitting, conversion and delivery.
05Can a producer TDS tensile value release an incoming film lot?+
No. A TDS typical value remains attached to its named material, specimen and reporting basis. Lot release requires a buyer-controlled requirement, traceable lot evidence, agreed sampling and a responsible disposition decision.
06Does a higher tensile result prove better tear, puncture or line performance?+
No. Those failure events and use stages require their own applicable evidence and representative validation. A tensile row cannot approve converter runnability or finished-package protection.
