Elongation at break does not tell a buyer how an extended stretch-film specimen recovers, what deformation remains or how stress changes with time. Matching film names or units do not make these methods interchangeable.

ASTM D4649-20(2025) is active and supports buyer/seller selection, specification and application of stretch films within its stated indoor-environment scope; it does not cover outdoor-exposure performance. ASTM D5459-95(2025) is active and separately names machine-direction elastic recovery, permanent deformation and stress retention of stretch-wrap film. ASTM D8314-20(2025) is active and addresses film after hand or machine application to a unit load or test structure, expressly separating applied performance from independent film-property testing. ASTM D882-26 is active and covers tensile properties of thin plastic sheeting; its public significance statement cautions against treating data as significant for applications with widely different force-time scales. ASTM D5458-95(2025) is active and owns peel cling between stretch-film layers. These methods are not equivalent, interchangeable, convertible or substitutes for one another. 01Does elongation at break prove elastic recovery?

No. D882 elongation and D5459 elastic recovery answer different specimen questions and retain different method, extension, time and output bases. Keep them in separate evidence rows.

02Are elastic recovery and permanent deformation interchangeable?

No. ASTM D5459 names them as separate outcomes. Record each under its original result name, specimen history, extension and time basis rather than calculating one as a substitute for the other.

03Does stress retention equal peel cling or holding force?

No. D5459 stress retention concerns an identified film specimen, D5458 owns peel cling between layers, and applied holding or containment requires a separate unit-load evidence plan.

04Can a D5459 result approve a pallet or transport route?

No. A specimen result does not qualify the load, wrapper settings, handling, transport or field environment. Those decisions need representative applied-film and use-stage evidence with buyer-owned criteria.

05Does ASTM D4649 cover outdoor stretch-film performance?

Its current public scope is limited to stretch films intended for indoor environments. Outdoor exposure, weathering and field life remain separate evidence questions.

06Does this guide mean LayerSource supplies stretch-wrap film?
