Plastic-film heat aging vs shelf life: oven hours are not storage months
A controlled hot-air exposure can show how a named property changed for an identified plastic specimen under the recorded program. It does not turn oven hours into shelf-life months. For PE, PET or BOPET, CPP, BOPP and metallized films, keep the exact construction, batch, exposure, controls, pre/post property results and real-time storage record together before making a buyer-owned decision.

An oven exposure record is not a shelf-life result
ASTM D3045-18(2026) defines hot-air exposure for plastics without load and requires the property of interest to be measured by a separately selected method. It cautions that temperature can change the material mechanism and that lower-temperature endurance estimates can carry very large errors. ISO 2578:1993 remains published and current for evaluating thermal endurance from property changes after prolonged elevated-temperature exposure. Neither public scope establishes package food shelf life, product stability, migration, sterile-barrier integrity, transit life or a universal conversion for a flexible film.

06 EVIDENCE BOUNDARY
Thermal-aging standards do not create a universal shelf-life conversion or a LayerSource result
ASTM D3045-18(2026) is active for evaluating plastics exposed solely to hot air for extended periods without load; it specifies heat exposure while the selected property is determined by a separate method. Its public significance text cautions that elevated temperature may change material behaviour or morphology, that Arrhenius use depends on the mechanism remaining applicable and that lower-temperature endurance estimates can contain very large errors; the term service life should be avoided for that estimate. ISO 2578:1993 remains published and current, confirmed in 2021, for thermal-endurance evaluation based on changes in selected properties measured after specimens return to ambient temperature. ASTM states that D3045 and ISO 2578 address the same subject matter but differ in technical content; this page provides no equivalence or result conversion. ASTM F1980-21 is limited to accelerated aging of sterile barrier systems and medical devices, requires real-time studies in parallel and excludes package-performance events such as distribution, handling and shipping; its medical-device context and Q10 discussion are not transferred to general flexible film, food packaging or another shelf-life claim. 01Can oven heat-aging hours be converted directly into shelf-life months?+
No universal conversion is supplied. A defensible interpretation depends on the exact material, property, failure criterion, mechanism, exposure program and real-time confirmation. Keep the reported hours as method-bound exposure history rather than relabelling them as storage months.
02Can one Q10 or Arrhenius factor be used for every PE, PET, CPP, BOPP or metallized film?+
No. Temperature may change morphology, transitions, volatiles or degradation mechanisms, especially in multilayer and semi-crystalline materials. The responsible technical and laboratory owners must justify any model for the exact construction and property; this guide supplies no default factor.
03Are ASTM D3045 and ISO 2578 equivalent?+
No equivalence or crosswalk is supplied. ASTM's public note says they address the same subject matter but differ in technical content. Select the governing current method and preserve the original report basis.
04Does heat aging prove barrier or heat-seal retention?+
Not by itself. Exposure is only conditioning. OTR, WVTR, seal strength or another property needs its own applicable pre/post method, mapped controls, original results, units, variability and buyer-owned criterion.
05Does a film aging record prove packed-food shelf life, product stability or migration compliance?+
No. Those decisions depend on the packed product, complete package, contact conditions, applicable legal or stability program, real-time evidence and responsible approval owner. A plastic-film exposure record cannot substitute for them.
06Can ASTM F1980 be used as a general flexible-film shelf-life rule?+
No. Its official scope concerns sterile barrier systems and medical devices. Its accelerated-aging model, Q10 discussion and expiry context are not a universal rule for food, industrial or general flexible-film storage.
