Plastic-film low-temperature brittleness and cold crack: keep the method result outside service-temperature approval
A room-temperature dart, puncture, tensile or tear result does not answer whether an identified finished film or sheet will fail under a selected cold-crack method. Even a reported brittleness or cold-crack temperature remains attached to its specimen, orientation, conditioning and test basis; it is not automatically the lowest temperature at which the film or package can be used.

ASTM D1790-21 is active and addresses brittle failure of plastic sheeting under its specified impact conditions. ISO 8570:1991 remains published and current, but its live ISO record entered systematic review on 15 July 2026 and is at stage 90.20. ISO describes a finished product of given thickness and texture, not raw-material composition. ASTM says the two standards address the same subject matter but differ in technical content, so neither method nor result may be treated as equivalent, converted or substituted.

06 EVIDENCE BOUNDARY
The method result does not become a service-temperature, package or LayerSource claim
ASTM D1790-21 is active. Its public scope concerns brittle failure of plastic sheeting under specified impact conditions; its significance statement limits prediction to similar deformation conditions, says the result does not necessarily determine the lowest use temperature and notes sensitivity to fold and sampling direction. ASTM also says applicability beyond the method's original plasticized-vinyl context must be verified by the user. ISO 8570:1991 remains published and current, while its live ISO life-cycle record is at stage 90.20, under systematic review since 15 July 2026. ISO's public abstract describes a finished film or sheet of given thickness and texture rather than raw-material composition. ASTM says D1790 and ISO 8570 address the same subject matter but differ in technical content. ISO 7765-2:2025 remains a separate instrumented impact-puncture method, and ASTM E171/E171M-11(2020) remains a separate nominally ambient conditioning practice that excludes freezer, refrigerated and abusive conditions from its general scope. This page reproduces no paid procedure, specimen geometry, fold, impact setting, conditioning value, exposure time, test temperature, sample count, calculation, failure percentage, threshold, tolerance or pass/fail rule. Resolve the assumptions that make quotes diverge.
01Does an ASTM D1790 result equal the film's lowest service temperature?+
No. ASTM's public significance statement says the method does not necessarily determine the lowest use temperature. Keep the result on its reported specimen and method basis, then validate the real film or package under the buyer's intended exposure and handling sequence.
02Are ASTM D1790 and ISO 8570 equivalent?+
No equivalence or conversion is supported here. ASTM states that they address the same subject matter but differ in technical content. Select the governing current edition contractually and preserve each result under its original method.
03What is ISO 8570's current status?+
The live ISO record lists ISO 8570:1991 as published and current, but at stage 90.20 under systematic review since 15 July 2026. Recheck that record before quotation, testing and publication; this page does not predict the review outcome.
04Does dart, puncture, tensile or tear evidence prove cold-crack resistance?+
No. Those methods use different loading events, specimens and outputs. Keep their results separate and select the evidence that matches the identified failure risk.
05Can a finished-film cold-crack result approve a frozen or refrigerated package?+
No. Printing, coating, lamination, folds, seals, filling, packed-product contact, cold exposure and handling can change the failure mode. Validate the representative finished package with buyer-owned criteria.
06Does the guide prove a film's resin or grade?+
No. ISO's public abstract says the method characterizes a finished product of given thickness and texture, not its raw-material composition. Material identity and exact grade require separate traceability and evidence.
07Does LayerSource supply freezer-grade or cold-resistant film?+
