01 PACKAGE SEAL EVIDENCE
Flexible-package seal strength vs leak integrity: choose the evidence before comparing
A strong strip result does not by itself show that a package is leak-free, and a package leak result does not report peel force. Start with the failure question, package or specimen stage and decision owner, then select the applicable current method and keep each output in its own evidence row.
02 DECISION FRAME
Seal separation, leakage and burst are different package questions
ASTM F88/F88M measures force while separating a strip that contains a seal and records specimen failure mode. ASTM F3039, D3078 and F2338 address different leak-detection contexts, while ASTM F2054/F2054M addresses restrained-package burst. None is a universal substitute for another, and no method result should be extended beyond the tested specimen or package system.
- A buyer deciding whether an F88 seal-strength row answers the package-integrity risk
- A converter separating material or seal-process evidence from completed-package leak evidence
- An RFQ that must name the package stage, method, output and acceptance owner
- That high strip seal force proves the package has no channel, hole or other leak path
- That dye, bubble, vacuum-decay and burst results are interchangeable or share one sensitivity
- That any cited ASTM scope establishes a LayerSource test, laboratory, converting or package-supply capability
03 COMPARISON MAP
Match the method family to the failure question and tested article
Use the public scopes below only as a selection map. The responsible technical team and laboratory must confirm the current licensed method, package applicability, controls and acceptance rule.
Swipe or scroll horizontally to review every evidence column.
| Evidence row | Question it can address | Keep attached | Do not infer |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASTM F88/F88M seal strength | Force required to separate a test strip containing a flexible-barrier seal, plus specimen failure mode | Seal identity, specimen source and width, support technique, direction, conditioning, output and failure mode | Leak location, leak rate, whole-package integrity, burst pressure or user opening experience |
| ASTM F3039 dye penetration | Qualitative detection and location of leakage in the method's nonporous package or flexible-barrier contexts | Applicable method, package or sheet type, tested area, dye contrast, controls, result and disposition | Leak size, leak rate, seal force or a reusable test package; ASTM identifies the test as destructive |
| ASTM D3078 bubble emission | Gross-leak determination for flexible packaging containing headspace gas within the method's scope | Package/product state, material, headspace, selected test parameters, observations and acceptance basis | Detection of every small leak, a universal sensitivity or a seal-strength value |
| ASTM F2338 vacuum decay | Nondestructive leak detection for listed package categories by pressure change in an evacuated chamber | Package system, fixture or masking basis, calibration, controls, baseline, decision threshold and result | A universal detection limit, a strip force, a leak location or automatic applicability to every package |
| ASTM F2054/F2054M restrained burst | Pressure at perimeter-seal burst for an applicable flexible package held within restraining plates | Package and seal geometry, restraint setup, pressurization basis, burst location, pressure and equipment context | Seal uniformity, overall package integrity or direct correlation with an ASTM F88 result |
04 SELECTION SEQUENCE
Move from a broad comparison to an approvable decision.
Name the suspected failure path
State whether the decision concerns seal separation force, a channel or hole, gross leakage, a calibrated package leak response, or failure under internal pressure. Do not begin with a familiar method code.
Identify the tested article and stage
Distinguish a laboratory-made or package-cut strip, empty package, product-filled package, porous or nonporous construction and the exact conversion or life-cycle stage.
Assign separate acceptance rows
Keep each method's result, controls, sampling and decision rule separate. Combine evidence only through a buyer-approved package qualification plan, not a numerical conversion between methods.

06 EVIDENCE BOUNDARY
No single result establishes seal force, leak integrity and package release
ASTM F88/F88M-23 covers force to separate a seal-bearing strip and specimen failure mode; its public text notes that support technique and material bending can affect results. ASTM F3039-23 is a destructive, qualitative dye-penetration context for detecting and locating leakage in specified nonporous packaging or flexible-barrier materials and does not quantify leak size. ASTM D3078-02(2021)e1 addresses gross leaks in flexible packaging containing headspace gas and warns that small leaks may not be detected. ASTM F2338-24 is a nondestructive vacuum-decay context for listed package types and requires package-system-specific calibration and acceptance logic. ASTM F2054/F2054M-13(2024) measures restrained-package burst and explicitly does not establish seal uniformity, overall package integrity or correlation with F88. This page reproduces no paid procedure, equipment setting, detection limit, fixed acceptance value or cross-method conversion. The sources establish no LayerSource film, foil, laminate, grade, package, laboratory, testing, converting or supply capability. Buyer, supplier, converter and responsible laboratory must approve the tested article, current licensed methods, controls, criteria and finished-package release plan.
07 BUYER QUESTIONS
Resolve the assumptions that make quotes diverge.
01Does a high ASTM F88 seal-strength result prove leak integrity?+
No. F88 measures force while separating a strip that contains a seal and records specimen failure mode. A package can require a separately selected integrity method for channels, holes or other leak paths, plus an approved finished-package release plan.
02Can dye penetration, bubble emission and vacuum decay share one pass limit?+
No. They have different package scopes, test principles, controls and outputs. Keep the selected current method and its buyer-approved acceptance basis attached to each result; do not transfer a threshold or sensitivity from another method.
03Is ASTM F3039 dye penetration quantitative?+
No. ASTM's public significance text describes it as a qualitative go/no-go method that can verify and locate leakage; it says leak size cannot be inferred. It is also destructive, so tested packages are not returned to final product use.
04Does vacuum decay find the location of a leak?+
Not by itself. The F2338 public scope describes detection through chamber pressure change for listed package systems. Package applicability, fixtures or masking, calibration, controls and decision thresholds must be established for the actual system.
05Can a restrained burst result be converted to an F88 strip result?+
No. ASTM F2054/F2054M states that the burst method may not correlate with seal strength measured by F88. Keep pressure-at-burst, strip separation force and their specimen or package conditions as separate evidence.
06What should a first supplier enquiry request?+
Request the exact construction and seal geometry, package and product stage, named failure question, current applicable method, traceability, controls, original result, failure or leak location, acceptance owner and the remaining finished-package validation plan.
