Antistatic film: separate resistance, charge decay and package evidence

“Antistatic” is not a complete film specification. First state whether the decision concerns surface or through-thickness resistance, dissipation after a defined charging method, charge generated by contact and separation, or protection by a complete package. Then keep the method, film side, conditioning, specimen history and evidence level beside every result.

Select the electrostatic question before requesting a number

IEC 61340-2-3 and ASTM D257 provide resistance or resistivity method contexts. IEC 61340-2-1 addresses charge dissipation and explicitly separates corona charging from a charged-metal-plate method that may not give equivalent results. ASTM D4470 addresses static electrification under controlled conditions. IEC 61340-5-3 classifies properties and requirements for packaging intended for electrostatic-discharge-sensitive devices. Those records answer different questions and cannot be converted into one generic antistatic pass statement.

06 EVIDENCE BOUNDARY

No single value creates an antistatic, ESD-safe or package-protection claim

IEC 61340-2-1:2015+AMD1:2022 CSV measures charge-dissipation ability and says its corona-charging and charged-metal-plate methods are different and may not give equivalent results. IEC 61340-2-3:2016, with COR1:2023 included in the current official copy, covers resistance and resistivity methods for solid materials used to avoid electrostatic charge accumulation. ASTM D257-14(2021)e1 covers DC insulation, surface and volume resistance contexts but says results depend on factors including electrification time, specimen and electrode geometry, temperature and humidity, and its scope is not suitable for moderately conductive materials. ASTM D4470-18(2025) addresses generation and measurement of static electrification under controlled conditions; its scope does not solve hazards or unwanted-charge elimination. IEC 61340-5-3:2022 addresses property and classification evidence for packaging materials and packaging intended for electrostatic-discharge-sensitive devices; it does not turn one base-film result into a complete-package protection conclusion. This page reproduces no paid procedure, fixed threshold, service-life rule, conversion, certification or compliance conclusion. It establishes no LayerSource film, grade, additive, inventory, supply, manufacturing, testing, laboratory, packaging or ESD capability. 07 BUYER QUESTIONS

Resolve the assumptions that make quotes diverge.

01Is surface resistance the same as charge decay?

No. Resistance or resistivity and charge dissipation are separate evidence rows with different methods, apparatus and outputs. Do not convert one result into the other or use either as proof of low charging.

02Can IEC 61340-2-1 corona and charged-metal-plate results be compared directly?

Not as equivalent results. IEC states that the two methods are different and may not give equivalent results. Preserve the selected charging route, specimen arrangement, potential endpoints, conditions and timing basis.

03Does one film resistance result prove an ESD-protective package?

No. IEC 61340-5-3 concerns the identified packaging system and its applicable properties. A base-film result does not automatically classify a converted bag or complete package or prove protection for an item.

04Can a result transfer between film sides, humidity levels or sample ages?

Not automatically. Keep side, construction, environment, conditioning, age, storage, handling and conversion history with the result. A changed surface or specimen needs a separately approved comparison or requalification plan.

05Does ASTM D4470 establish that an electrostatic use is safe?

No. Its public scope addresses controlled generation and measurement of static electrification and excludes solving hazards or eliminating unwanted charge. Safety and hazardous-environment decisions require a competent owner outside this guide.

06What should the first supplier enquiry include?

Include the electrostatic question, exact construction and specimen stage, tested side, requested method and edition if confirmed, conditioning and environment, sample history, original evidence role, buyer-owned decision rule and remaining converted-film or package validation.
